We are a four acre experimental nursery/florist/wildlife sanctuary/botanic garden beside Bolean Creek in the mountains above Falkland, BC. What began in 1997 as a small, traditional ornamental garden has grown and diversified into a place where wildlife and farming can not only coexist, but where each helps the other. Insects in our gardens and on our crops are controlled by amphibians, wild birds, and other insects – we do not spray anything, ever. Our ‘natural’ ponds overflow with frogs, salamanders, dragonflies, and other insect predators. More than forty species of wild birds make temporary or permanent homes in our gardens and in the trees along the riparian zone, eating insects and raising their young. Pollinators are one of the keys to our success, and we provide not only a diverse food supply for them, but also enough habitat so that they have a place to live, reproduce, and expand their populations.
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and roses. In fact, very few roses are capable of surviving in our Zone 3b climate, our winters are long, dark, and cold, and our soil is mostly sand and rocks. As a consequence the trees, shrubs, and perennials we sell are all extremely hardy, and our selection of cut flowers is quite unique.
We love what we do here, and we don’t do it for the money (what money, ha ha, we’re farming!) We do it because we love meeting gardeners, talking about plants, and gently encouraging people to maybe provide a little bit more habitat for other living things.
